How should I record a video clip?

Solo shoots are made of many small video clips. While the content of the clip is is what customer see, the approach used for recording each clip also affects the final result. The process should be as follows;

Process for starting to record a video clip

This process should be used for every video clip captured.

  1. Direct the model, as necessary
  2. Check light is excellent, make adjustments as necessary
  3. Set appropriate exposure
  4. Get camera position, get comfortable to hold the shot steady
    1. Consider what camera movement is necessary, and practising it so it’s smooth
  5. Focus
  6. Press Record ⏺️
  7. Wait three seconds (“pre roll”)
    1. Double check exposure and focus
    2. Visualise recording indicator
    3. Count the seconds (in your head)
  8. Call “Action”

The three seconds is called “pre-roll” and allows time for the camera to start recording smoothly, and ensure the first part of the model talking / doing the action is not cut off.

Process for ending recording of a video clip

  1. Call a “Stop” for the model to stop her action
  2. Wait three seconds (“Post roll”)
    1. Count the seconds (in your head)
  3. Stop recording ⏹️
    1. If there is a separate camera person, call “Cut!”

It’s also fine to just keep recording if the next clip will start in the next 20 seconds or so.
