What is picture of the day? (POTD)

ABOVE: Unlike production images, models are sometimes encouraged to ‘play-it-up’ for the camera in Backstage images. Emilia and Chen brushing their teeth would be ok Production content but the exaggerated expressions on their faces and camera-acknowledgement makes this an excellent Backstage image! Their playful personalities and the fun on-set atmosphere are evident in the subtext of this image, at the same time as allowing customers a peep into pre-shoot preparation.  Images that touch on multiple good things make ideal POTD images.

Picture Of The Day (POTD) is an image we select from recently submitted Backstage images, that is released almost immediately onto the website. POTD serves several purposes:

  • Alerting customers to new content that is not yet ready for release
    • A customer might be just about to “cancel” their rebilling subscription, but spot a favorite model in a POTD image, and choose to rebill for another month to see that shoot
  •  Demonstrating model community
    • POTD images tend to show happy and engaged models, which is part of the reason customers choose to buy from abbywinters.com (we are well-known for looking after models; customers like that – and so do models!)
  • Providing a sense of immediacy
    • The media produced for abbywinters.com is designed to be consumed on any date, today, tomorrow and years into the future.
    • For that reason, we are careful not to include references of what is happening now in Production shoots (for example, themes like Christmas; New Year; football World Cup; Olympics; global pandemics, none of these would form part of the Production shoot).
    • Backstage / POTD, being a one-time near-immediate release (plus the Backstage Archive where all these cultural events things should be referenced) helps redress that balance, making models seem more “human” and relatable.

The requirements of What makes a good backstage image apply to POTD images but there are two additional considerations:

  1. POTD images must be landscape
  2. POTD images may be seasonal / date-specific moments

Why landscape?

The space allocated to POTD on the members news page is landscape orientation – so only landscape images fit. The website was built this way because landscape orientation images will fill a customer’s computer screen, giving them maximum abbywinters pleasure with no wasted pixels.

Seasonal / date specific events

Content created for abbywinters.com should always be relevant. For example, a Christmas-themed Girl-Girl shoot are never created, because while they have high appeal in December (and maybe November), the feel weird in January, and really strange in any other month. Less customers will view those scenes, making those scenes less valuable.

However, POTD is designed for single-use on a specific day, so it is appropriate for those images to be seasonal / date-specific!

Suitable events that could be referenced to in POTD include:

  • Christmas
  • Easter
  • New Year’s eve / day
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Burn’s Night
  • St Patrick’s Day
  • Talk like a pirate day, or similar Days
  • International Chocolate day
  • International Women’s day
  • Halloween
  • Independence day for a given country
  • Hanukkah
  • Thanksgiving
  • Winter solstice
  • The model’s birthday

Considerations when capturing Seasonal / date-specific events

Seasonal and date-specific POTD images can be fun to do and valuable for the website, but SPs need to ensure that models and customers are never offended or uncomfortable with what is being produced. Holidays can be referenced and appropriately celebrated but content should never be anything someone might consider “sacrilegious”.

For example it’s fine to see a model dressed in green clothes with a sign saying “Happy Saint Patrick’s day!” with her breasts out… but it would not be ok to see a model penetrating herself with a Hanukkah candle! 😧

A model naked in a scarf and hat to mark the winter solstice is fine, a model in “black face” to celebrate Martin Luther King Day is not!

When shooting in real locations SPs may find that seasonal backstage opportunities are already set up, with no need for additional work. For example many people put decorations up at Christmas-time, so it is simple to capture a naked model by a Christmas tree at the end of the shoot. SPs are asked to submit Christmas-themed images to be released as POTD around the holidays – the addition of props like Christmas hats, reindeer ears and jingle bells are all encouraged!

ABOVE: This image of Victoria J and Tiffany took no planning (the location owner just happened to have a Christmas tree) but makes for a lovely Christmas themed POTD image. It’s a little risky (devoutly praying while nude; alluding to being Mary, pregnant), but is acceptable.

ABOVE:  Examples of Christmas themed POTD images that SPs pre-planned for to ensure models brought hats, jumpers, candy cane socks etc. SPs who produce multiple model shoots should plan to shoot their Christmas POTD images on a shoot day with the maximum number of models on-set – the more models the better!

Process for seasonal / date-specific POTD images

SP’s email those images directly to their main abbywinters.com contact (in addition to ingesting them via the usual method), to ensure that the image can be processed in a timely fashion.

Subject: Seasonal / date-specific POTD for (<date as 23-Jun-2022>)

Hi,

On-set today we shot some Backstage images based around  for use as a POTD soon.

The images are attached.

Model’s Birthdays

If a model is being shot on or around her birthday, an SP might decide to surprise her on-set with a candle-in-a-cup-cake, birthday balloon or similar.

For privacy reasons, abbywinters.com never shares a model’s date of birth, and the dates of a shoot’s creation are never published (however, with model’s permission, we do publish models’ real Starsigns on Model pages). The text accompanying such a POTD image might read:

Model Mary was surprised on set this week with a special cake for her birthday – as if we would forget!
